Comparison

Civet vs Shopify Translate & Adapt

Translate & Adapt is Shopify's own free translation app. Civet is a planned paid app for stores that need more languages, bulk previews, undo and protected edits.

Competitor details checked on October 24, 2026 against the public sources listed below.

Translate & Adapt is made by Shopify and is free. For many stores it's the right place to start. Automatic translation in Translate & Adapt is limited to two languages.

Both apps store translations in the same place, Shopify's native translations. So translations Civet writes can still be viewed and edited in Translate & Adapt, and the other way round.

Civet is in development. Civet's column describes planned features and pricing, which may change before launch.

When Translate & Adapt is a good fit

You need two languages or fewer and your catalog is small enough to review by hand. It's free, made by Shopify, and stores translations natively.

When Civet is a good fit

You need more than two automatically translated languages, or your catalog is large enough that you want to preview every bulk run, protect your manual corrections and undo a run in one click.

FAQ

Common questions

I already have translations. Will Civet overwrite them?

Not unless you ask it to. Existing translations are treated as protected when you install. The first preview shows them as "kept", and you choose whether any should be re-translated.

Does it work with Shopify Markets and my theme?

Yes. Civet uses the languages you publish in Shopify Markets, and your theme shows them through its own language selector. We don't add a widget. Shopify creates the language URLs and hreflang tags itself.

What happens when I uninstall?

Your translations stay. They're saved in Shopify's own translation fields, not in Civet, so your translated store keeps working exactly as it is. You can still edit them in the Shopify admin.

There's nothing to clean up: no script, no theme code, no DNS records. Billing stops through Shopify. What goes away is Civet itself: auto-sync, the undo history, the glossary and the SEO audit. When Shopify sends its data-deletion request after uninstall, we delete what we stored for your shop.
