Frequently asked questions
Civet is a Shopify app, in development, for bulk translation and multilingual SEO. It translates a store's catalog into up to 20 languages and writes the results into Shopify's native translations, with a preview before each bulk run, protected manual edits and one-click undo. It's built for founder-run stores with large or frequently changing catalogs. It isn't on the Shopify App Store yet. Can't find your question? Email hello@getcivet.com. The person who built Civet reads every message.
- What happens when I uninstall?
Your translations stay. They're saved in Shopify's own translation fields, not in Civet, so your translated store keeps working exactly as it is. You can still edit them in the Shopify admin.
There's nothing to clean up: no script, no theme code, no DNS records. Billing stops through Shopify. What goes away is Civet itself: auto-sync, the undo history, the glossary and the SEO audit. When Shopify sends its data-deletion request after uninstall, we delete what we stored for your shop.
- I already have translations. Will Civet overwrite them?
Not unless you ask it to. Existing translations are treated as protected when you install. The first preview shows them as "kept", and you choose whether any should be re-translated.
- Does it work with Shopify Markets and my theme?
Yes. Civet uses the languages you publish in Shopify Markets, and your theme shows them through its own language selector. We don't add a widget. Shopify creates the language URLs and hreflang tags itself.
- What content gets translated?
Products, variants, options, collections, metafields, SEO titles and descriptions, URL handles and image alt text. Content from other apps can be translated when that app stores its text where Shopify's translation system can reach it.
- Will this improve my Google rankings?
We can't promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Civet fills in each market's translated titles, meta descriptions, URL handles and alt text, and checks that the hreflang tags Shopify generates are present and point to the right pages. Whether those pages rank is up to search engines.
- How good are the translations?
Civet uses a modern AI translation model, guided by your glossary and brand voice. You review every bulk run in the preview before it goes live, and you can edit any line, which then stays locked as yours.
- Are there word limits or credits?
No. Plans are limited by number of languages and products, never by words. You don't need your own API key.
- Is there a free trial?
Yes. Starter and Growth include a 14-day free trial, billed through Shopify, one per store. During the trial Civet translates up to 500 products. Once the first charge goes through, your plan's full limits apply. If you uninstall before the trial ends, you aren't charged.
- What does "fair use" mean on Growth?
Growth covers every language your store supports (Shopify allows up to 20) and products up to roughly 50,000. Very large catalogs above that may need a custom plan. We'll tell you before charging anything different, and nothing changes without your approval through Shopify.
- How is native translation different from a script or proxy?
Some translation apps show translations by adding a script to your storefront or by routing visitors through their own servers. In public reviews, merchants describe slower pages, a flash of the original language, and leftover code after uninstalling.
Civet adds nothing to your storefront. It writes translations into Shopify's own translation fields, so your theme shows them on Shopify's language URLs (like /de/), and there's nothing to remove if you uninstall.
- How does Civet compare to Shopify's free Translate & Adapt app?
Translate & Adapt is Shopify's free app, and for many stores it's the right place to start. Its listing limits automatic translation to two languages. Civet's Starter plan covers 3 languages, and Growth covers every language your store supports (Shopify allows up to 20). Civet also previews every bulk run, skips lines you've edited by hand, and can undo a run in one click. Both apps store translations in the same place, so you can use them side by side.
- When does it launch, and who's building it?
We're aiming for an App Store listing in early 2027. People on the waitlist get access first. Civet is built by an independent developer with a background in web development and technical SEO. When you email, the person who built the product replies.
